AGM 2008

  COMPETITIONS

The 2008 Annual General Meeting and display of work will be held at Longslade Community College, Birstall, Leicestershire, on Saturday 20th September.
This College, again, is a very suitable venue. Being near Leicester, it's in a very central position in the UK, most accessible along motorways from all points of the compass, so we hope to see as many members as possible there. Parking is convenient and there is good disabled access. Food will be available at midday and drinks and snacks at other times.

The AGM allows you to meet your committee and see how the Guild works, vote on the issues of the time and of the future. It's good to have your say.

It's also a chance to exchange ideas with other quillers, getting ideas from people from very differing craft backgrounds, all sharing your interest in Quilling.
There will be some who are artistic and jaw-dropping when you see what they do. There are some who come along because they are starting quilling and would like to see what's around in their region and others, even from other countries. Viewing the regional tables and the competition entries gives you lots of ideas and some challenges to go for. You can even take part in the voting to award those who made the best entries in each category. You can meet your Regional Rep, too, and put a face to the name. There will be the chance to root around what the traders have brought and see what's new.

For your helpful driver or family, there's plenty in the region. The countryside is lovely, with picturesque villages; a huge lake, Rutland Water at Empingham, for boating and hiking around; a wildlife wetland area and nature reserve at Watermead Country Park; Bradgate Park, where there are famous oak trees, red and fallow deer and the birthplace of Lady Jane Grey; a steam railway close by; The National Space Centre, for an out-of-this-world experience, and many more entertainments for the young and the more sedate.

See you there!

COMPETITIONS

At AGMs and Festivals, there is a chance for you to enter quillings you made during the last year into several competitions. The different competition subjects allow for a range of interests and challenges, and give beginners, as well as experienced quillers, the chance to join in and, maybe, surprise yourselves. Here are the competition rules, so that the requirements for each category are clear. There are some new categories. As this is the first year we're trying them, we may have teething problems. Any feedback would be appreciated for future years.

Voting - On the day, each member attending the AGM is entitled to vote once for the quilling they admire most in each category. As you move around with your coloured voting slips, you can bear in mind what the entrant should have done, and what you, personally, appreciate in the quilling, and cast your vote. We make every effort to keep the identities of each entrant a secret until the voting is over, and the awards can be made. This method of voting has proved to be very fair, which is a credit to the good judgement of the voters (you!).

COMPETITION RULES:

1.   All entries must be original and must have been made within the year since the last AGM. Please do not enter more than one piece per person, per category.

2.   Each entry must be made entirely from quilled paper strips and glue, using the techniques currently recognised by the Guild as quilling, which can be found in the Members' Handbook. (For exceptions, see the categories).

These are the categories:   (If you won a category last year, we ask that you do not enter that category this year.)

3.   Beginners - for those who've been quilling for fewer than 18 months, by the time of the AGM. You may choose to enter other categories this year.

4.   Greetings Card - the theme for 2008 is "A Card for a Child" (under 10 years old). The maximum card size is 8.5" x 6.5" (216mm x 165mm) front face; quilled design only - no printing, peel-offs or written lettering, etc. allowed. Remember, only one entry per member, please.

5.   Quilling Plus - this category allows you to complement your quilling with other materials or techniques. These should, however, be kept to a minimum.

6.   Free Standing - this must be completely self-supporting; to be quilled entirely from paper, glue and card; must not be attached to a base which is not quilled; may be placed on a base for display enhancement.

7.   Quilling in a Frame - Rule 2, above, applies, but the frame does not, necessarily, have to be quilled. The overall dimension of the frame is NOT to exceed a total area of 225 square inches (5715 square mm); e.g., 15" x 15" (381mm x 381mm) would qualify, as would 18" x 12.5" (457mm x 317.5mm).

8.   Quilled Box - Rule 2 applies to the decoration of the box, but the box, itself, can be of any suitable material - it is the quilling which is being judged. You must demonstrate at least three different quilling techniques. (Not all surfaces need to be quilled.)   Minimum size: 5" x 3" x 3" (127mm x 76mm x 76mm)   Maximum size: 12" x 12" x 12" (300mm x 300mm x 300mm).

9.   Quilling on ..... - this category allows entries to be mounted on different materials, such as wood, eggs, polystyrene, etc. However, the quilling should conform with Rule 2.

10.   Never Placed in a Competition (i.e. 1st, 2nd or 3rd) - a new category for members who have never had success in a Guild quilling competition before. This category will be open, this year - any type of quilling.

11.   'Masters' Category - this is a new category for the more experienced quillers, for Fellows, for anyone who has had a quilling book published, for anyone who won a first prize in the previous year's competition in any category, (excluding 'Beginners' and 'Never Placed') and also for anyone who likes a challenge. As previously stated, we would also request that anyone who won a first place one year (i.e. 2007) does not enter the same category the following year (i.e. 2008).

12.   Your individual entry number, as supplied by the Competitions Secretary (see Committee page), must be attached to each piece.

13.   A typed explanatory note may accompany your work, if you feel this would clarify your interpretation of the subject.

14.   Your name, or other distinguishing marks, must not appear on any piece.

15.   NB. Pieces must meet the above criteria, or they will be disqualified.

Junior Competition - there are three age categories: under 10 years - 10 years to 14 years - 15 years to 18 years. All the above rules apply, including rules regarding sizes of cards, boxes and frames.

Regional Displays - the display should be interesting and inspirational, and be a good interpretation of the theme (if you have one). There should be a good variety of work, showing a range of complexity, and indicating that all levels of experience have contributed.

Special, Non-competitive Awards are also made. Either of these special awards would grace any sideboard for a year, a high accolade for inspired quillers.

The Rose Bowl -   is given for an interesting or unusual quilling not entered into any competition. Rules 1 and 2, above, apply.

The Salver -   is awarded for excellence in quilling, for a piece of work which may or may not have been entered in a competition. Rule 1 applies. Rule 2 does not apply, although you are reminded that too many other materials will detract from the quilling.

We hope that this information will help to ensure that all Quilling entered in the Annual Competitions meets the Quilling Guild's Requirements. We would be as unhappy as you, if we had to disqualify entries which do not comply with them. So get quilling and enter as many competitions as you can - spread your chances of success - but do read the rules carefully to make sure you don't fall at the first hurdle.
